Jam packed sports weekend. Everything from full contact to, "shouldn't" be any contact. First Phillipe Gilbert took the first stage of the Tour. Cancellara made an attempt to break for the finish but Gilbert followed and finished stronger to take the victory in the opening stage. Cadel Evans followed Gilbert but could only chase, as he was not strong enough to over take Gilbert and placed second. You heard it here first, I still think Horner or Cancellara will be the 2011 Tour de France winner.

Then Maria Sharapova was upset by... what was her name again? I would offer a prize for the first person to guess, but all I have to offer is bragging rights.

Let the smack talking begin! Klitshko defended his "titles" again successfully and won another defeating Englishman David Hayes. Hayes found out today that he is not a master of psychology like fellow countryman and former Heavyweight Champion Lennox Lewis was. Of course Lewis had that massive six foot, four inch, two-hundred and forty plus frame to back him up though.

What happens in Vegas eventually comes to light too! Uriah Faber and Dominic the Dominator square off there tonight, but the big fight for me is the fight featuring a very lean, very tough, and very aggressive Wand Silva sending Tito Ortiz off on a sad note. I think Ortiz will get gassed and Silva will stop him. I'm talking the Dominator in 3 on points, and The Axe Murderer Silva by stoppage mid way of the second against Ortiz.

Rub them the right way! NASCAR presented a thriller tonight from Daytona. David Ragan after 163 starts i believe it was, won his first ever race at Daytona! How sweet would that be!? He held off a bumper pushing Matt Kenseth for the win. Kenseth played fair, and didn't put him in the wall like a few others would have or at least tried to do. Jeff Gordon had a strong car and was making a great late charge, then Vickers got into the 4 car that turned him completely sideways, down the track from the wall, almost to the grass, and after yelling OMG, OMG, OMG... the 24 car was straight and working up the track again! What a fantastic save by Jeff Gordon! Oh and the "G" in OMG stands for "goodness" in my blog. Not using the Lords name in vain or being blasphemic and making it stand for Gordon! At any rate, their is the imperfect day in sports...

So what sport did I miss? Yankee baseball doesn't count so don't bother.

What's Sweeter?

I once played in a late afternoon black top classic. It was about 102 degrees in the shade at 3:30pm. It was a day when you could almost dehydrate from watching the heat lift from the pavement! We didn't care then, we were young, resilient, and having too much fun to care. Play for twenty, break for five, then run them back! My group had been playing game after game that evening. We ran about ten straight, then the sun started to drop, and along came another group. My group was feeling good, and ready to run with whomever. We had size, and a ton of talent, we felt invincible. We had (thought we had) a huge advantage. We had some leapers, we had height and most of us had been playing since we were able to hold a ball. We played against other guys just like us all day, and walked the dog with them! Then at the dropping of the sun round about 90 degrees, minus the heat index on the black top, the tide turned and the dog walked us! We played against a very cohesive unit, and they murdered us! Five guys (not one of them over 5'4"), lightning quick, and verbal! They were Vietnamese kids that did everything together. They ate together, did chores together, studied together, everything! They played unselfish, they played with a passion, and they took advantage of every mistake we made.

On this particular day we made plenty of mistakes. Our biggest mistakes were being over confident and casting blame on everyone but self. We didn't work at all, one pass (if that) and shoot. Then when you are lazy in transition that equals a slaughter! We may have looked to cast blame individually, but as with all team sports, we went down in flames as a "team!"

Word in Cleveland was that Bron blamed poor coaching for Cleveland's not winning a title! So, will that be the case in Miami as well? Well my boss, said something (as a Laker hatin' Celts fan) that shocked me. What he said shocked me, but gave me even more reason to be excited for the 2011-2012 season. He said something to the affect of how cool would it be for Coach Brown to go to LA and win a title with Kobe, and leave LeBron once again shaking his head in -or in near- tears thinking inside his head like Nancy Kerrigan said out loud... "Why, why, why!" Well greed, and self righteousness could be LeBron's Tanya Harding, and until he sheds them, he will be saying, why, why, why... for a long time! I don't know how long Kobe and Coach Brown will stay friendly, but I like Browns way of thinking. He said he would abandon the triangle offense, and run something similar to what they ran while he was an assistant under Pop (Greg Popovich) in San Antonio when Duncan and Robinson were their and they won titles. Well it would be sweet for Lakers fans everywhere and for Cleveland fans as well, not to mention all the LeBron haters if the Lakers or Cavs could win the coveted NBA Championship in the 2011-2012 season.

How (Not) To Gain A Starting Position

As a youngster in a large city, you are the fastest kid on the block or perhaps even the school. The you graduate preschool, and move up to grade school, and you're still the fastest kid in your class. Then you advance to middle school, where nothing much has changed and yep you still run faster, jump higher, and are more athletically gifted than the rest. In high school you are the standout point guard. Your dad was a decent player, and he's worked with you over the years, so no shame in your game to this point. You are sought after by some prestigious universities, and the recruiters are calling daily, and desire to sport their colors on your back. You are on top of the world and feel sooooooo important! You just know that no school can make it without your services.

Let me say that I believe in confidence, but arrogance sucks wind, and blows chunks. Don't get me wrong, I believe we could all be a little happier every now and then, but we could also be a lot more pitiful! Whatever the situation, that is still no excuse to act like a Cry Baby!

Where is the whole "Cry Baby" drama stemming from? Larry Drew II, or as the Tar Heel faithful affectionately refer to him as, SOK (Some Other Kid)! Well SOK was quoted by Ben Bolch of the LA Times as saying in the May 28th article, "When you're winning, everything's good. When you're losing, it's opposite. Going to a school like that, I was aware of the potential for how things could be. I wasn't aware to the extent."

Yes, it's "Man Up" time! Not, "They booed me mama, I can't go back there," time! You can't handle that at the collegiate level, then how in the world can you believe that you are good enough to go pro!? Living in LA have you ever been to Chavez Ravine as a kid? Well I was blessed and fortunate enough to visit there plenty. I heard guys boo Enos Cabell, and yell false accusations of his drug abuse, before his drug abuse was ever brought to light. OK baseballs not your thing, how about a date with the NBA? Ever been to MSG? They booed John Starks, and even NBA legend, and Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing! Yes on their home floor!!! What's even worse than being booed? Being on a team where you can hear a mosquito in the rafters fart, because your fans can't even muster up the strength to stomach a boo! Then you see the twenty-thousand plus dwindle to about two-thousand, as the seats empty. Sadly enough that's the most noise you hear all game, is when the fans are leaving! Welcome to the early years of Sedale Eugene Threatt, and company. That's booing my friend. When your fans are used to big things, and winning, they get a little cranky when that's not happening. Go ask Reggie Miller about Spike Lee at courtside. Check in with Nicholson as he throws up a choke sign atcha!

SOK later said that while he was at his party, he was venting, not "dissing" anyone. He just had to get the following off of his chest, but again allow me to remind you, he's not dissing anyone... SOK said, via rapping at a party, "They tried to tell me just to play my role, but who's really trying to stick to a script full of typos?"

Where did he see typos? And even for a rapper, he is grammatically off! OK on that note, here's a quick survey... All of those who truly feel that SOK deserved starting time over Ty Lawson raise your hand. None of you!? Wow! Was he good enough as a freshman to be the back up even? Oh but wait, an even better question! Who thinks SOK deserves a start over Kendall Marshall? WOW! Same results as before! My opinion isn't much so let's go to the facts. Here's the fact sheet on SOK:

In the '08-'09 season he averaged a little over nine and a half minutes a game. So who's lying, the kid who cried about not getting to play, or the coach that gave him limited playing time based upon his (poor) decision making, and inability? Wow! So he (SOK) did play some didn't he? That last question was rhetorical, and moving right along... with his playing time, those non-existent (according to SOK) 9.6 minutes he averaged a very impressive 1.9 assists, and 1.2 turn overs. Even with limited play, or a better term for you freshmen, "especially" with limited playing time, turn overs can change your nickname from "Driving Larry Drew II," to "Driving Miss Daisy II!" The road traveled by a turn over king is a very short, and rocky road to the pines, right next to coach, or even worse to the end of the bench where you are ostracized! Let's look at it this way, two to one in the assist to turn over ratio department is OK if you are averaging 12 assists per game. Even if you give up six baskets with your six turn overs on fast break points you're only sacrificing as many points as you have in your 12 assists that have earned your team double the points at 24 or possibly but not probable 36 points. So unless you crack under pressure with your team down 12 in the last minute and a half of the game and you yield your six turn overs then, you are in good shape. It's not likely that is going to happen, but again possible, although not probable. So if in the game you surrender the ball six times, but have twelve assists to cover you, the opposition with six three point goals still trail you by six or eighteen points! That's three trips to the foul line on two point baskets or nine trips on three point baskets. Bad shot decisions on your teams behalf, or no defense could be the blame, but it's not all on you if the team loses. Two to one assist to turn over ratio with two assists, and one turn over, is four points in your favor, and the possibility of two or three points against you. That's a shot away from defeat! Which in most every coach, player, and fans mind is no bueno!  So with numbers like 3.9 assists, and 2.0 in turn overs, there is no room to cry. When you play against mediocre teams, and have 6 assists and 3 turn overs, you shouldn't go away feeling like you are an all-star. When you have more turn overs than assist in big games and your team loses by a basket, or twenty points (see the GA Tech game) that should tell you something! It told Coach Williams something, "START KENDALL MARSHALL!" See the 2010-2011 Vanderbilt, Minnesota, and Texas games just for beginners.

So SOK, have fun in the sun, and keep working on that individual game, Barnes, Marshall, The Twin Tar Heel Towers, and supporting cast will be working together to make this season just as successful as last season. To conclude, thank you SOK for bailing, it ranks as the second best thing to happen to Carolina in the last decade! The #1 thing would be getting a great coach that knows how to bench a Cry Baby, and win!

End Times or Times Ending?

May may not have been the end of the world, but it will be the end of the NBA Conference Finals. We are on a crash course for the second ugliest Final in NBA history! Yes, time is ending for the 2010-2011 NBA season. 1986 produced the ugliest NBA Conference Finals, and Championship Finals ever for me. The Western Finals saw my beat up Lakers take on the Twin Towers of Houston. I am glad now that Jerry West was the GM for the Lakers instead of all of the naysayers that suggested Ralph Sampson over James Worthy. The Rockets, and Ralph Sampson unfortunately downed my Lakers in the Western Conference Finals that year. It was sad times for me and the Laker Nation in 1986. The Finals of 1986 saw the Houston Rockets and Boston Celtics get pretty nasty! That NBA Finals ranks numero uno for me in the ugly department. I have a very bad feeling that the ratings, and the Finals this year have the potential to be the second worst Finals match up in NBA History! Hold tight, will Dirk, and LeBron have a moment of their own? Will will see, but as I have predicted to this point, the young guns still just do not have enough star power, to push them to the finals...

There is a prettier picture however, if history really repeats itself, then next year the Lakers will be World Champions again, and  have back to back Championships! It will also mean that we will lose Abdul-Jabbar again. No, I am not predicting the end of Kareem's life, just his good standing with the Lakers. Magic again will have to pull through for the big fella, and get him a statue to go along with his five rings. Mr. Abdul-Jabbar is still ticked off about the whole non-existence of a statue in his likeness in front of the Staples Center thing.

Tommy Heinsohn, a former Celtic, is calling the game in the video above, and gives blow by blow details on the "fist-a-cuff" that breaks loose when Ralph Sampson takes the initial swing that would clear both benches! What is it with the Rockets and fighting! Rudy T (an innocent by stander) was cold cocked by Kermit Washington (is it just me, or do you laugh while reading that name as well?) Then there was a not so innocent Vernon Maxwell. Vernon was coached by the above named Rudy Tomjanovich in the franchises only championship years (1994 - 1995)and unlike Coach Tomjanovich he was not so innocent, and had his fair share of skirmishes. When someone mentions belligerence and ugly basketball in the same sentence, Houston is the city that comes to my mind first. New York, and Indiana run a tight second. Not because the number of brawls, but what led to the brawls. NOTHING!

No, to you Bulls fans, The Worm (Dennis Rodman) kicking a totally innocent camera man in the crotch, or head butting a referee do not count. Rodman was a not a brawler he was a mentalist/mental case, a very fit mentalist/mental case, that should have taken one to the noodle himself!

Charles Barkley didn't win a championship, but played in one. He wasn't a brawler per se, just a tough basketball player with a dirty boxers mentality.  Plus Charles didn't play or get involved in a game or brawl as ugly as the Rockets - Celts series. Charles as a member of the Suns was a tough team leader. Charles as a Sixer was a bully. NOthing in the paint was the motto of a young Charles Barkley. He intimidated players and is partly responsible for the flagrant foul rule that is now a part of the league rule book. As commentator Charles is somewhat a bully with Ernie Johnson. But Ernie tolerates Charles, doesn't run from him but doesn't speak as freely as I am sure that he would like to and does as well as anyone when it comes to putting up with Sir Charles. Only Kenny Smith has more fun with Charles, and can talk trash back to him, and do so without being the least bit timid. Charles is a riot in the booth, and is finally learning to control his outburst, and not talk over other commentators. I should say controlled to a degree which to this point has allowed him to remain on National Broadcasts. I think he has more control and is a better team player in the booth than he manifested on the court. Not to take anything away from him, because love him or hate him, he was a beast on the court. Mr. Barkley, has a humor and passion for the game, and most of it's players that have grown on me. His battle with ethnicity, and attitude are to be desired, however. I think his book, "Whose Afraid of the Big Black Man," has had ten more readers than my blog. My money may not speak as loudly as Mr. Barkley's, but my spirit does! Money I may not be able to take w/ me when I die, nor can Sir Charles, but my spirit, yeah I can take that with me. ;) And where we take it next is either a very level playing field with a Righteous Judge, or a hot one that has no balance at all. I love ya Charles, and pray that you, and your brother now both have a lasting relationship with "The Righteous Judge." Brother Cahill (former Auburn University teammate of Charles Barkley, Author, and Evangelist), can you give Charles another call?

On that note, May 21st was not the end time, the false prophets were wrong, but it is very near to the end of another NBA season, and that is a definite! May it end well, and in Stanley Cup fashion!
