On Our Way

This would be a sweet start! I was hoping it would be a victory against Duke, but a title is sweet nonetheless, so Go HEELS! BEAT BC!

I sat among the devils in the regular season game. Needless to say I didn't get much love from them, but fellow some fellow Heels applauded my stand and a few joined me!

This is the first step... the final destination is the NCAA crown! Go Heels, go!

Carlos Somoano (pronounced Some-wah-no) has taken over the UNC Mens Soccer program. Change of hands, but no change in results. The UNC Mens Soccer team is currently ranked third nationally and will play Boston College at noon on ESPNU today for the ACC Crown. Carolina has a staggering defense, and the offense to compliment the tight D, from midfield to strikers. However, they will need to bring their A game to the ACC championship game. BC will most definitely be bringing theirs. See you at noon on ESPNU.

The Carolina Womens Fieldhockey Team continues it's winning ways, and advanced to the second round yesterday on their quest for a NCAA title. GO HEELS!

The Men's basketball team won the inaugural Carrier Classic against Michigan State atop the USS Carl Vinson on 11/11/11 to honor our veterans. President Obama and the first lady were aboard, and our nations finest servicemen and women were on deck as well. This is the first of hopefully many victories for this season, and hopefully en route to another NCAA crown Coach Williams and the gang.

The football team had a bye week, which means UNC went undefeated this weekend in collegiate sports this 11/11/11 weekend!

NFL
The Raiders won on Thursday, so that's one down, with two more to go in the NFL. The Bad Black Cat's play the Titans today, and the Packers will take on conference rival Minnesota.

Cigano Dos Santos defeated (The belt holding and previously undefeated) Cain Velasquez last evening to take the UFC Heavyweight title. This gives Brazil 3 of the 7 belts! The Brazilians are showing they are a force to be reckoned with in Mixed Martial Arts! Featherweight Champ - Jose Aldo; Middleweight Champ - Anderson "Spider" Silva; and newly crowned Heavyweight Champ - Junior "Cigano" Dos Santos.

The Brevity of Life (Tribute To Heavy D)

A tribute to the Overweight Lover Heavy D. David Arrington Meyers aka Heavy D was said to be conscious and laboring in his breathing on his walk near his condo when the paramedics arrived. He was taken to the hospital, and later pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. According to the Beverly Hills police, no foul play was suspected!

Standing in the lunch line, I almost wish I could get Moe's to let me hijack their turn player, and blast "Please Don't Curse," one good time! That's the song I'd pay my last respects with. Pay my last respect to a man that tried to keep it clean, during an era of not so clean music...

44 years young. Tells me that none of us need to take life for granted. We may not have 40 more to enjoy with family, or to watch our kids grow. But if you have a relationship with Christ, you can see those of your loved ones all again, if they too are born again.

Conviction In Numbers (A Tribute to Joe Frazier)

Joseph William Frazier was born on January 12, 1944. Joe dropped out of school at age 13, but on March 8, 1971 Smokin' Joe dropped Muhammad Ali in Round 15. He would defend his title, that night via decision over Ali.

"Smokin'" Joe Frazier in one night lost his Olympic Trial match to Buster Mathis, and nearly lost his will to continue on as a fighter. In one other night Buster Mathis, whom later broke one of his hands, and unable to represent America in the Tokyo Olympic Games, was replaced by a more determined than ever Joe Frazier. In one night Joe Frazier remembered his uncle telling him as a youngster, that one day he would be the next Joe Louis! One night Smokin' Joe went on to win the 1964 Olympics! Joe had a few other good nights after that one. Joe Frazier avenged his trial loss by defeating Mathis as a pro, and then after boycotting (protesting in support of the boxing commission to reconsider reinstating Ali) a Heavyweight elimination tournament, he would gain the Heavyweight crown from Jimmy Ellis in 1970. He held the title for three years, handing Ali his first loss, and defending his title one other time before losing it against Big George Foreman!

Joe Frazier in his storied career was the David of the boxing world filled with Goliath's! He wasn't chiseled like a Greek statue, didn't have the defined muscular look of a Mike Tyson. He wasn't the fastest man in the ring, he wasn't the strongest, or even the most athletic in the ring at times. What was Joe Frazier, and what made him a champion? Heart and plenty of it! Joe possessed a heart, work ethic, and toughness that didn't know how to back down from a challenge.Joes threw every punch with conviction. Joe aimed to hurt you with every punch! From his jab to his patented left hook, Joe didn't know how to throw and easy punch, and aimed to set you down with each one of his punches. Joe fought 37 times as a professional, and won 32 of the 37. He only lost to two men... George Foreman (twice) and Muhammad Ali (twice). His last boxing match ended in a draw. Once a kid who fled the segregated dirt roads of South Carolina became a man that helped 10's of thousands of kids escape the rough paved streets of Philadelphia. Joe may have lost to Ali and Foreman in the ring, and had a draw in his last boxing match, but he ultimately won his last fight. Some will say that he lost the fight to cancer, I say he won, because as his brother, I know that Joe Frazier is with the Lord, and there's no way you can lose when you're with God, or when God's with you. God bless the Frazier family during this difficult season....

OK we don't pay to watch the owners, but that doesn't mean that they aren't worth looking at in the news. Compromise is a tough for some people to swallow. Wonder what Paul Pierce would say if he were offered part ownership of the Celt's when his illustrious hoops career is over? Would he be barking about how wrong the owners are in taking 49% of the revenue, or would he say that the players are greedy, and it's his money that's being fronted for costs? It's his money that manages the moves, that make it a more suitable playground for his players... Are both sides (Players Union & ownership) greedy? Of course, but who allows them that power? Have you paid $150 for a pair of J's lately? Have you forked over just as much for the latest Bron-Bron or Black Mamba gear? Most players are not shelling out the money for these marketing ideas, or product, they are merely putting their names on it. Some, not all but some owners have already been down that road, so players please know that you have a whole host of young Americans, and fans world wide, that would like to see an end to the nonsense, and a beginning to a season! Or if 51% is not good enough, how about the Al Davis of basketball step forward, and start another league, oh wait, we already went thru the ABA-NBA merge didn't we!? Here's to college hoops, at least their still playing. So who's with me.... I say we go on strike and stop buying anything NBA for at least a year even if they start playing, just to teach them a little somethin' - somethin' bout greed!

Who Deserves A Second Chance?

I am inspired by courageous true stories. Stories that may not start out so well, but end in fine fashion. The true story that I would like to share with you now, is about a man named Dewey Bozella. Dewey Bozella was imprisoned for 26 years for a murder he didn't commit. Mr. Bozella was said to have lived a life of petty crime before his conviction. Dewey Bozella went to prison for allegedly murdering 92 year old Emma Crapser on her way home one night. The state lacked physical evidence, but the lack of that evidence was overcome by the false testimony of convicts, and Mr. Bozella was sentenced to life in prison. His avoiding a lifestyle of petty crime may not have changed his being falsely accused, but if you think like I do, then you're thinking it couldn't have hurt him. It is no guarantee that a clean cut lifestyle would have helped Mr. Bozella, however, odds are better in ones favor, if one lives their life in such a way that can outweigh the testimony of a convict. I thought about that after reading Dewey Bozella's story, and asked myself one simple -two part- question, "Does your word hold up against a convicts, who's more convincing?" I.E., I was always that kid wearing the goofy grin, therefore, if i broke wind in class (in front of anyone) just once in my life, from then on, I was guilty for every foul smell, and wrongful act committed, that arose anywhere within a one mile radius of my being. Sad, but true. Also sad but true, Jesus (totally without sin, or crime) was convicted, and sentenced to death by crucifixion! So again no guarantees that just because you live a wholesome life, that you will not be judged falsely by men. However, the risen Righteous Judge, will set you free, when you stand before Him.

Dewey Bozella is an Arthur Ashe Courage Award winner -which is given by ESPN- and has a perfect 1-0 professional fight record. Bozella defeated Larry Hopkins in his debut professional fight (no relation to then Light Heavyweight Champion Bernard Hopkins). Oddly enough however, Bozella's fight with Larry Hopkins was on the undercard of the Bernard (B-Hop) Hopkins fight. Unfortunately for the Hopkins, both of them were defeated. Bernard's fight ended via an awkward TKO where he was dropped (not by a punch, but by a toss) landed on his arm, jamming his shoulder, and unable to continue. Larry, was out classed by a more mature Bozella. Dewey Bozella is not a national household name because of his being the prisons Light Heavyweight Champion, or because of his lone professional fight/victory/career. However, in his community, Bozellla is a well respected name. Well respected because Dewey Bozella is doing great things, and giving back. Dewey Bozella is giving back to his community by giving the kids in his community a chance to begin with. Why? Because Mr. Bozella understands that some of those kids, may not be as fortunate as he was to have a first chance, that grants them a pass to a second chance! Mr. Bozella said that his debut professional fight would be his first and last, and that he would not fight again after his big fight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. However, in my book, his greatest fight is ahead of him. Dewey Bozella's greatest fight, will be helping kids stay off the streets and out of trouble, by keeping his gym open, and teaching those kids self discipline, and self respect. My prayers go out to a great man, fighting for an even greater cause!
