Three Cities, Three Weeks, Three NFL Camps II

Part two brings the Lexus TravIS300 to a halt in Flowery Branch, Georgia. Home to Atlanta's Dirty Bird Training Camp. As I had mentioned in the first of my NFL Training Camp blogs, we're in the South visiting camps. The southern region of the finest nation in the world, and home to footballs, Falcons Nation.

This blog, like the first, will also cover culture, cuisine, and gridiron craziness. I'll give you a look at an NFL following from a birds eye view. A Falcons view to be exact.

Culture:
Southern Hospitality; where the rainbow meets the sun, where manners are a way of life, and it's all instilled in a Southerner before they learn to walk.

The Falcons culture was much like the culture found in Redskins territory. A nicely collaborative gathering of ethnic diversity where the only language spoken was "Dirty Bird!" One thing different was that there didn't appear to be as many women at the Falcons training camp, but there seemed to be more couples. Regardless of the single female populous, people were friendly enough, and no rival fans bothered showing up at Flowery Branch.

The day that I chose to attend was a gorgeous, mid eighties type of day. The sun had shone brightly all morning, but was not overbearing. The event was well planned, and organizers prepared to make this a memorable occasion for its fans. Trolleys transported people from the lot to the gate, which also helped with keeping the day as cool as possible. However, just in case it was a bit too hot still, and people needed a proper distraction from the heat, the facility greeted all of their supporters with sprinklers, and the teams motto at the front gate, "Rise Up!"

First things first... Food, and drink! No rain to put a damper on this camp, so folks looked for drinks over food, and organizers had it covered. $1.00 water, or Gatorade! GoTravvy was already liking this training camp. Cue the commercial voice, "but wait, there's more!" Not only was the Falcon faithful blessed with a 20 oz. dranky drank for a buck, but flame kissed burgers, with all the trimmings were only a dollar to match! It's worth the trip just to get the yard burger and drink.

The food was very reasonable, the souvenirs on the other hand, well let's just say that the NFL is proud of its gear. $40 and up for a t-shirt is not the way to go if you're an everyday average Joe. But the staff was friendly. So you're paying a great deal for service with a smile.

Go Travvy has camera, will travel.

More pics, and players to come.

Remind Me Why...

Remind me why we celebrate...
Celebration, creates celebrity. Celebrities are figured that we admire. We admire their services, we admire their abilities. The imperfect Christian is also an imperfect father. Therefore, he acknowledges the One that is worthy of being celebrated daily... our Heavenly Father.

The imperfect one is grateful that He has blessed him with fine men in his life. The imperfect one's great-grandfather was a great Christian man, as was his grandfather. They taught him to respect all, especially his Heavenly Father.

The imperfect Christian had great experiences with them. Fishing trips, baseball, and various sporting events, and some outings that words cannot detail, or do justice. Especially the old, "Suppertime Fart Story!" But the most memorable thing that the imperfect one carries from them is that they loved him enough to tell him and show him that at any time. They taught their sons that as well. They instilled family value, and it passed along nicely through the following generation.

The imperfect one's uncles are selfless because of the examples they were blessed to follow. The uncles taught the inperfect Christian to open doors for a "lady," and to be respectful. We all disagree from time to time, but one can be respectful in doing so. With that said, how many are worthy of having a door opened for them, how many "ladies" are left?

The uncles also taught him about sacrifice and priority. They also enforced such rules. They taught and enforced the "please and thank you," rules. They are/were great, great family men. They would lay their lives down for those that they love:
What greater love does one have than One that would lay His life down for them?

The imperfect one had three great examples to follow as far as uncles are concerned. Therefore, the imperfect one is grateful for the Christ-like men in his life. The men that inspired him to take the Deep Gap Trail trips back in the day, and take the BlurRidge rides now. He is grateful for the positive role models that stepped up when he needed a father figure. He is grateful for men not too proud to show affection, not too proud or timid to have hugged him even when he was undeserving. He is grateful for the men that talked with him when he deserved being shunned. He is grateful that they helped him when he didn't have enough sense to help himself. Thank You Lord, for the good fathers and father figures that step up. Because of that the imperfect Christian is a grateful and loving father himself. He may not be perfect, but he is caring and loves being a father to four of the greatest children God could ever bless him with. With that, to all active true fathers, Happy Father's Day, and thank You, Father.

2 B U10 Again...

The lessons learned.

Humility:
When a beautiful little girl brings you a box of pudding crackers (Nilla wafers), because her mother is a great coach and has a compassionate spirit that believes in bettering her players lives. It's amazing as to what a box of Nilla wafers and a box I doughnuts will do for you. Thanks coach Meredith.

When a great coach tells you he'll assist you in coaching a team when he's as capable if not more so in leading the team to victory. Coach Ramos, you sir are the man!

Honor:
When your parents tell you they're grateful for your taking time for their kids, and you're thinking, I'm grateful you trust me daily to mentally, physically, and spiritually push your child(ren) to be better people and good little soccer players. Thank you Knockout parents.

I love this game, and I love my players even more!

Mad Props Monday

Mad Props Monday:

To dad's that aren't too macho, to post or openly say how much their children mean to them. This Mad Props Monday is for you.

For teachers like Jorge Lopez. You are not just a good father, but an inspiration to a whole new generation! I pray that you bless many classes to come as a teacher. You are a father figure to many that will never know their fathers, and a morale booster to those that do, but don't get the support they desire from home. I wore red for teachers like you today.

To friends that know how to treat you, because they treat you like you want to be treated. They can empathize with you, when it comes to the knowledge of being mistreated, they (Chubb Rock intro) treat you right. You already know who you are, and... that I love you!

Props to some really great clergymen in our county and adjacent counties. Pastor Jeremy, Pastor Brad, for the opportunities, and the words that I am undeserving of, thank you. I am more than grateful for you! You rock because of the Rock, and no I don't mean Mr. Johnson, although, he's a bad man!

To professionals that are not afraid to show you a glimpse of the person outside the office, inside the office. Thank you Hal Harrison, I truly hope you will be a judge in our county very soon! Well part of me at least, the other part of me says you are an excellent attorney, in fact too good, and I'd like to be able to call on you if the need ever arises again. Thank you sir, for all you do!

To directors that allow their actors and artists to grow, rather than limit them in their productions, I give you props! Andrew Gall, you are a class act sir, your response and understanding are greatly appreciated, and I am forever grateful. So anyone reading this, go see, "A Few Good Men." Scott Keel, Dan Clancy, and Jen Russ just replaced the faces of Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson, and Demi Moore on my DVD cover. They are awesome leads, and are supported by some very special people as well. They are as talented as they are good looking, so reserve your seats now. A Few Good Men will run through September 7th.

Last but certainly not least:
Props to my children, I am proud to say that if I haven't taught you anything else, I am glad to know that I have taught you how to love, because I not only see, when you all smile at me, I not only hear it when you laugh at me, I feel it everyday when you are near me.I love all of you!

Time To Look Back to Look 4Ward...

It was a beautiful Friday, sun shining, mild NW wind, just gorgeous. I got in a little later than what I had anticipated. I thought after my late arrival that I would not have the opportunity to ride like I wanted. Then one of my best friends, and my little sister caught me in the driveway. Wow, now I'm really thinking no ride for me today! I changed the top half and slipped into my jersey, and jacket while they talked with me, then went inside to change the lower. My son asked if he could go to his best friends house, and so now I've lost my riding partner! Uggghhh, what next! God steps in, and says ride, and take me. My little sister, my mom, and my life long friend pull up beside me and tell me that they are the team car. Boosted my spirit, and let me begin my ride with a smile.

I took my few hours of sunshine and took the ride to the mountains. The mountains make me feel free, so I called on them and then rode back into town. The vista from the Chalet was unreal!!! You could see for miles!!! I could see two counties over at the top! Then came the Blue Ridge Parkway! The head wind took my top mile per hour down, so I couldn't descend as quickly as I would have liked to, but it was a fun downhill regardless of the head wind, and the chill.

I got to spend time in meditation on the ride, and do a ride through town. No I didn't shoot at anyone, not a ride by, but a ride through. I had time to think about those that mean something to me, and felt even closer to them as a car almost backed out into me. Hahaha the reflexes are still working! Maybe not as good as they once were, but with Gods' hand they moved me out of harms way. I didn't go as fast as I would have liked to overall on the ride, but I did get to go hard! I saw friends in town and along the way, and I stopped to talk with them rather than wave, seem too busy for them, and then just ride by. Life is too short not to show people that you care for them! Take time to show you care, God "made" time for you (literally Genesis 1), and He will "make" time for you (John 15:26&27)!

The inaugural Family Remembrance Ride was perfect!

We Dream, We Live, We Believe

Don't just say you believe. Show that you believe.

We believe that what we think is right, when it's really all wrong...
We believe that what we sing is music, when we really have no song...
We believe that we climb the mountain, when the mountain is climbing us...
We believe that we are Trekking, when we can't even afford to ride the bus!

Dream while you sleep, Live while you're awake!

My Yellow jersey, will come with completing a few tasks for my family today. My team will reach the podium when we all finish with the agenda that's at hand. Run the race with faith, and let your steps be that of the righteous, let them be ordered from a Power so high, that nothing can bring you down!

See you on the black top and the trail, until we hit the streets of Gold... Peace

Which Way Is Up?

Proverbs 24:16 say that the righteous man falls seven times, only to rise again.

Several have fallen physically, and several others have fallen mentally in the 2011 Tour de France. Some riders felt the agony of Stage 8 and the Super Besse while others rejoiced in personal triumph. Rui Costa of Portugal (pictured above via Getty Images) won Stage 8 in fine fashion. He rode up front in the final portion of the stage, made his break and was victorious. Schleck stayed with Contador as did Evans and Hushovd, and they finished safely while maintaining their positions and advantage over the rest of the field.

17 "The highway of the upright is to depart from evil; He who keeps His way preserves his soul." Proverbs 16:17 (NKJV)

The highways of France can produce certain dangers, and so can the road to life. Some riders try to avoid danger, while others take more risks. Costa jumped out front and rode a smart race and successfully finished first in Stage 8. So how is it that we jump out front in the life race. Get up earlier, rejoice more, and give thanks. Rui Costa pointed toward the heavens to thank God after the stage, and as a devout Christian (more than likely Catholic) I gather that it's safe to say that he prayed for a victory today and rejoiced as it was granted. I pray that I will rejoice and be more thankful today.

I am thankful for good Samaritans today, and grateful for a Comforter in The Holy Spirit. I dedicated this blog to a downed rider Lie Nielson who in Christ can rise again. Blessing to his family. God be with his widow and five year old twins. For the full story:

What A View!

I set out later than I wanted on the cloudless Saturday morning. It was already a warm Southern morning with the dew burning off quickly, and the sun muscling its way through the cool morning breeze. I knew the climb would be tough enough, and now I also had a feeling that the heat would be a factor as well. 77 degrees can feel like 107 when you are fatigued and early in a season, and especially when you are not used to the temps rising. Mild temps or high temps, I wanted to be in more than just survival mode, I wanted to be a conqueror! My endeavor this Saturday morning was to test the legs to see what we had left. My analysis: the heart is still good, and according to many, the mind has always been questionable, but they both begged the legs to get us all to the top of the mountain. Six thousand, six hundred, and eight....y - four (6,684) feet to the summit at Mt. Mitchell, the highest point east of the Mississippi, with a new bike, old legs, and the same frame of mind! I tried to stay hydrated, I had two bottles of H2O, and a small 12 oz. bottle of (Blue)Berry Gatorade. For nutrition I took a couple of energy bars (a Power Bar and Zone bar) for an extra boost, and fared well. I put my empty bottles back in the cages, and my empty wrappers back in my under the saddle carrier. I was amazed at how others had not done the same thing! There were empty water bottles, and nutrition bar wrappers left after the ride (The Assault on Mt. Mitchell) this past weekend, all along the road side. I understand that this is a competition, but I also understand that cyclist leaving trash behind gives biking a blackeye! Yes it was consistent enough to confidently evidence to all others that the trash was left on the roadside by riders. If you are that close to the front, or if you are well off enough to ditch a bottle, then you should be well off enough to have a clean up crew as well. If you just don't care, then you shouldn't be too uptight with my wishing your being banned from future Parkway events.

I witnessed a few other irritating things along the way... first and foremost "horseflies!" Count all things joy the Bible says, so I can say that the horseflies were motivators, and encouraged me to pedal a bit faster, to rid myself of them. I saw several little green garden/field snakes dead on the road, and one ginormous Black snake, that appeared to be toting around five baby rabbits that she had for breakfast!  The Black snake was slithering off the road into the high grass, and looked to be approximately thirty-six or thirty eight inches long, and as big in diameter as a mountain bike tire. I am not a fan of snakes, so needless to say, this too creeped me out! If I had been mowing, this snake would have been a dead one as well.

THEN, yes a big then is very necessary for this one, THEN a playful Black Bear cub came wandering out of the woods! I nearly had a coronary, but as I stated before the heart is still good, and the will to live even better! I stopped, we looked at each other for a second, and I asked Kert what we should do next. Kert turned back downhill, and said he may not eat me, but I don't want your blood on my conscious, or my mangled frame. Kert is such a loser sometimes, but I love him, he's the most awesome bike I've ever had! At that point I prayed that the cubs mother was somewhere far enough away to give me a shot at a forty (40) mph downhill. I don't think that a Black Bear can run that fast, and even if they can, I am skinny enough to hopefully be a waste of time for one to expend that much energy. The playful cub then ran up the mountain side, and watched me from the ridge top. I was thankful that he observed from a distance, and all alone.

The ride in the the Blue Ridge mountains are beautiful. The Parkways dark tunnels, the views down into the valleys below, the mountain tops, it's so serene, and peaceful, that it truly leaves you with a sense being just a mile below heaven. I was in a head down, keep spinning, groove when I took a quick I look up and just at a glimpse noticed something round the curve slightly ahead of me. My initial thought, "Oh great what now, a rabid coyote!?" But this time it was a rider, and he was on the same quest. He too had his family trailing him, and was fighting to stay hydrated as well. He told me later that the last twenty-five (25) miles of the Assault from Hwy 80 up to Hwy 128 were much tougher than the seventy-five (75) miles from Greenville to Marion. After the climb to the summit, I am inclined to believe him! I also met a rider from Florida that said the same. He didn't like the decent as much. He said, "You don't have drops, and mountains like this where I'm from!" I am a downhill junkie myself! fifty (50) mph and more if I can get it!

The fire tower is a welcome sight. You know you have one last downhill after the watch tower, and that you are getting ever so close to THE mountain top.

I had finally arrived! I could see the sign for the State Park, and my heart went from a heavy beat to a flutter! Knowing that I was only three and half miles, or roughly just under four miles away from the top was encouraging. On the flip side knowing that my quads had started to tighten, and nearly seize after the twenty-eighth mile were a slight discouragement. I honestly didn't know that I would be able to climb Hwy 128 to the summit. My middle son, looked out the window and said, "You can do it!" I can't begin to tell you how that hit my heart! My wife was also yelling out encouraging words, "Come on old man!" Not really, she may have inside, but she yelled out, "You can do it baby!" My baby girl in the back seat yelling, "GO DADDY GO!" I knew at that point the only thing that would keep me from the top was the Rapture really taking place, or my legs just completely seizing up, and not churning the cranks to push me to the top. I would not quit, and would simply not turn back. The quads knotted, the hamstrings knotted, and I chugged a Strawberry Gatorade, and just kept pushing! I am one blessed fella to have a family stick behind me, and encourage the old man, to push to the finish. A twenty miler on Sunday is possible, but it will not involve a gradual three thousand foot gain! To God for sparing me one last climb, hopefully the first of many, to my family, to all cyclist, and my boy Kert, and Trek Bicycles, this blogs for you!

Who Needs Calgary?!!!

The Winter Olympics are coming up, so we thought we would kick them off in grand style. Welcome to the Hood, meets Country. Skateboards with no trucks, and a couple of airlight sleds, on a 100 ft. drive with a pretty mean drop. Let the fun begin!!!

Tomorrow is the Super Bowl, but we will be celebrating the last few hours of the Slush Bowl first.

So whose your pick for the big Sunday Game, and the Winter Games. I am not certain who will win Gold, but go USA!!!! As for the Super Bowl I am hoping to see 44 (XLIV) turn out just as competitive as 34 (XXXIV). Stretch... and OH MY... that makes or breaks the game... I wish all the fans, and both franchises the very best, but even with injury, or reports of injury, I am taking the Colts over the Saints, by 14. Final 44-30 Ponies.
